Someone emailed me yesterday, and mentioned they were going to make “a” wireframe to figure out how their site/app would work. Here’s my response… Wireframe are about QUESTIONS not answers. You should check out the website “whichtestwon.com”. They have a free test every month that you can see. It’s amazing because such subtle changes can change signups by 50% or 100%. When giving talks at conferences I often show three tests from whichtestwon to industry “experts” and surprisingly the “experts” do worse than random chance would suggest at identifying which perform the best! This this has taught me is to… Read more »

There’s a frequent debate about if an iPad (or any tablet) is a “desktop killer”. People (power users) often say “well I can’t use Photoshop on an iPad”. Or “I’m a video editor/programmer and need more processing power”. Or “I need three monitors”. Or “the accounting software that I use doesn’t run on tablets”. But most of these could/should be followed by the word “yet“. There is definitely a perceived gap in value. People just don’t pay $199 for mobile software (yet) so the economies aren’t there for developers to support the platform, but Benedict Evans writes that we’re looking at… Read more »

Here’s a roundup of some cool/smart news from the past couple of weeks: Apple is betting on Augmented Reality (Pokemon Go) I’ve been super skeptical of Augmented Reality (AR)… but Apple has released some amazing tools to developers which put it two years ahead of it’s competitors on this front and there’s some HUGE potential. The demos below were all whipped up shortly after Apple released the tools to developers (in some cases within hours or days) and show some potential to go FAR beyond Pokemon Go and are going to become second nature to us like this measuring… Read more »

It’s easy to feature great interfaces, but Poplar Mechanics has a great roundup of some of the WORST Volume Slider interfaces imaginable. There’s a lot of creativity here, many of which are inspired by reality.

A few years ago I was surprised by just how many large companies build prototypes in Keynote. Sure Keynote is a great tool with lots of power, and yeah most of the prototyping tools I’d tried were cumbersome at best, but it was still surprising. But as prototypes become much more of a requirement and less of a “nice to have” a couple of tools have come up to fill the void. I continue to be under-impressed with most Adobe offerings. It seems like every 6 months they release a new product to do this sort of work, but after… Read more »

Yeah it doesn’t work. A couple of people mentioned Opernative to me. It’s an online service which you can do from home to check your vision and it didn’t work for me. They did refund all my money and pay for the lenses that I bought which were the wrong prescription… so that’s something. I also want to mention, the way it works is pretty cool. You hold your phone and your phone gives you directions while you stand 10 feet from your computer monitor. But I may have messed it up. Every time except once it went “Cover left… Read more »
